Shou Sugi Ban – Our Newest Design
At the moment we are in the process of a new design, well, new to us!
It’s called Shou Sugi Ban.
Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese method that dates back to the 1700’s and involves the burning of wood.
Most commonly cedar , the wood is charred using a blow torch.
It is then straight away cooled using water:
While cooled it is then cleaned.Sandpaper, wire brush,steel wool or soft bristle brush- various different ways will result in a wide variety of finishes and textures:
It can be left natural but Stains, oils, lacquers and paints can be also be used on the timber:
Different levels of charring and finishing result in various beautiful textures and bring up stunning grain patterns:
It is environmentally friendly way to preserve the timber and makes it fire resistant. It is said to last more then 80 years with little or no maintenance.
The process is sublime and at the same time a bit dangerous but with the necessary caution, this can be perfectly achieved and the results are stunning.
